Artist Statement for M. Kathleen Colussy

My approach to making art has always been both reflective and restorative for me personally. I can honestly say I make art for me; and I make art for my creator. Hopefully in all of my art one can see that I enjoy exploring the freedom of combining several mediums into art that embraces and celebrates life, cultural diversity, spirituality, faith and the art of story telling with images. For this reason I have referred to my art as Trad-igital, because my art reflects both the traditional and non-traditional means of expression.

For me the computer as an artist has always represented a tool not unlike that of paint, a brush or for that matter any other tool an artist may choose to use in the creative process. While I doubt a Da Vinci struggled as much with a brush and paint as I did with a keyboard or a mouse remains an unknown. Nevertheless, one has to wonder did other the great artists grapple with similar issues as they began working with the “new medium” or technology of their day? Did the artist working with fresco find it any less exhilarating, frustrating and challenging than the artist working with today’s new software? I like to console myself with the fact that perhaps they did. Thankfully for me the recent advancements in both hardware and software considerations have begun to close the gap between the tension of man vs. machine, or artist vs. medium.

In my attempt to not take myself too seriously, I suppose you could note that, if Picasso had his “blue period” perhaps in my case one might say that I am in my “digital phase.”

The artist in me is thrilled to experiment with today’s technology as a new means of expression. While the educator inside of me seems to be always be searching for new ways to expand the boundaries of design, fashion and art. I use my art as a means to stimulate exploration, as well as a means to share and impart my discoveries with this new technology with my peers and my students. Simultaneously the spiritual woman deep inside still yearns for a means of expression of what I am feeling and seeing in my quite times of reflection, and for me my art satisfies all three!

Much of my art clearly reflects how I have been inspired by the new technology and techniques that have been at the heart of my research and writings in the area of digital rendering. While the subject matter for my works reflects on “who I am” as well as my personal belief system.

Many of the pieces were inspired by a famous quote or by images that were photographed while traveling. In my art I am ever trying to combine high tech and high touch to express a message of choice and consequences that I believe exist in the dueling realities of the natural and the spiritual.

My goal for the future is to continue to develop my personal artist style of expression and to be sensitive to where my spirit is leading me in producing and sharing my work.

For the foreseeable future I see myself continuing to be an author, artist and an educator. What better joy in life is there to spend a life of pursuing ones passion, and the extreme privilege of sharing and imparting that with others both in tangible works of art and in the education of the next generation?
